Si hace unos cuantos posts hablaba del debut de Hurts, hoy vuelvo a hablar de otro dúo de synthpop: los alemanes Edge Of Dawn. Lo que comenzó siendo un proyecto instrumental del teclista Mario Schumacher allá por 1999 aunque no fue hasta 2005, con la entrada del cantante de Seabound (otro recomendable grupo de synthpop) Frank Spinath, cuando la carrera de Edge Of Dawn comenzó a adquirir cada vez tintes más serios. Enseguida firmaron con el sello Dependent para Europa y con Metropolis para América y a finales de ese año vio la luz la primera edición del grupo: el EP The Flight. Viendo la acogida que tuvo el EP el dúo se decide a componer más temas y en 2007 sale su aclamadísimo primer disco Enjoy The Fall, que fue un éxito monumental en el synthpop actual. En 2008 sacaron el EP Borderline Black Heart, aprovechando el tirón que tuvo el debut. Dado el hype tan tremendo de Enjoy The Fall temía que lo siguiente que hicieran pasase desapercibido y desgraciadamente así ha sido pero tengo que decir que sin pretender desmerecer al debut, este segundo disco reafirma las excelencias del dúo alemán. Disco que, por cierto, es conceptual, ya que trata sobre la supervivencia.

El segundo disco de Edge Of Dawn comienza con Beyond The Gate, un tema que sin ser de lo más destacado del disco cumple con creces dándonos una buena muestra de ese equilibrio entre melodías pegadizas y ritmos pesados que caracteriza el sonido del grupo. En este tema además Frank Spinath hace un dueto con Reagan Jones, cantante de los electrónicos americanos Iris. Denial es un corte baladístico donde aparece una misteriosa y etérea voz femenina aumentando el aura tan melancólica de este tema mientras que All The Time tiene uno de los estribillos más memorables del disco, hecho que se repite en Stage Fright, aunque en esta canción nos encontramos en unas de las canciones más complejas, hecho que no le ha impedido ser single. Valid World sorprende por su rapidez y dinamismo, Capture es todo lo contrario y diría que es el tema experimental del disco, ya que a partir de ser instrumental casi todo el rato (a excepción de unas líneas en el idioma natal del grupo) cuenta con un sonido muy sinfónico que recuerda más bien a formaciones como Within Temptation o Nightwish (pero llevado al sonido de Edge Of Dawn claro, que aquí no hay sopranos). Lucid Dreams suena muy ochentera y es el corte que más recuerda a Depeche Mode o A-ha, destacar que aquí vuelve la voz femenina pero en esta ocasión en forma de discretos coros y apoyando la voz de Frank Spinath. Falling tiene una interesante estructura in crescendo que desemboca en otro gran estribillo y Siren's Call es una hermosa balada (aunque con algo más de chicha que Denial) muy atmosférica y con unos teclados que son para enmarcar. Entramos en la recta final con In Your Sleep, que a pesar de su comienzo acústico es un corte bastante movido, guitarrazos incluídos y acabamos de la mejor forma posible con dos cortes bastante misteriosos como son la dulzona Save My Soul, con otro de esos estribillos que no se olvidan y Capsized, el corte más juguetón de todo el disco, alternando melancolía con ritmos más vivaces, unas melodías vocales muy trabajadas y unos teclados a la par. Como sigan con esta línea ascendente van a conseguir ponerse a la cabeza del synthpop actual pero, por favor, que no tengamos que esperar otros tres años.
